Project Sunrise Academy
Situated high in the Himalayan mountain range, the Sunrise Academy is a not-for profit school established in 2005 in Begha, West Sikkim, India. Established to provide better educational and development opportunities for the extremely underprivileged children in the region and has rapidly grown in the past 4 years from 30 students to 110 in 2009. Its expansion and reputation have quickly grown as regional locals continue to recognise it as giving their children a chance at life and has the potential to improve the long term economic conditions of the village.
With very little consistent work in the village at present, the large majority of local families live in difficult and impoverished conditions with parents often having to travel long distances for seasonal work in order to sustain their families’ livelihood.
Together with a dedicated team of Australian’s, the school’s principal and school’s committee are embarking on a project to build a new school building, a hostel for orphans and extremely disadvantaged children. The school’s building has recently been funded through private donations raised in Australia and together with Australian nationals the ‘Society for the Children of Sunrise Academy, West Sikkim’ have set-up a free visitors program for English speaking individuals to assist in the children’s and schools long term growth and development.
Opportunities to assist are readily available and much appreciated and we welcome you to our school, our hearts and look forward to sharing smiles with you in the future. Please visit the 'Visit Us' section for more information.
